2. Find a Quiet Corner of Kilcarnup Beach

Kilcarnup Beach or Joeys Nose as most locals call it, is one of the quieter stretches of coastline north of Margaret River. Its remote location keeps it well away from the region’s busier swimming beaches, making it a favourite among locals seeking a little more space.

Access is either by a suitable four-wheel drive or on foot along the track. If hiking or four-wheel driving is your thing, this is definitely the place to go for an adventure that feels truly special and romantic.

Pack a picnic, find a sheltered spot among the dunes and enjoy the peaceful sounds of the ocean. There are no cafés, toilets or shops at the beach, which is part of its appeal, but it also means you will need to bring everything with you and take it home again.

Check the weather, swell and track conditions before setting out, as access can change. The Margaret River coastline is beautiful but powerful, so avoid swimming if conditions are rough or unfamiliar.

3. Experience Hot and Cold Therapy Together at MEND

If you visit during spring, from September to November, look out for wildflowers along the trail and whales making their southern migration offshore. Instead of visiting one of the region’s larger estates, make your way to the small, family-owned Whicher Ridge Wines.

It has a wilder feel than Gnarabup, with a broad stretch of sand, coastal dunes and uninterrupted views over the Indian Ocean. Visit late in the afternoon, bring a rug and find a place to watch the sky change colour.

This is an exposed surf beach rather than a sheltered swimming spot, so admire the ocean from the sand when the swell is up. If you would prefer calmer water, nearby Gnarabup is generally a better option for a swim.

7. Wander Through Boranup Karri Forest
